Questions about the Future

Hello and welcome to my blog.

This week it is my privilege to address the elephant in the room.  By now, most of you will have received “the letter” from Braeside Dental Centre informing you of my imminent retirement.  It has brought forth a myriad of questions that I was unprepared to answer.

The top two being:  “What are you going to do?” and “What am I going to do?”

I’ll start with the second because it is the easiest to answer.  The answer is: nothing.  You and your families have entrusted your dental health to myself and our staff and I am pleased to know that your dental needs will continue to be tended under the careful watch of Dr. Goel (who just happens to be my dentist)!!

He and I have travelled a common professional road in both education (U of A, School of Dentistry and later, the Pankey Institute) and clinical practice (22+ years together at Braeside Dental Centre).  Dr. Goel’s access and familiarity to your dental histories will be second to none; In fact, a large majority of you have likely already met him.  I am confident that he and his team will continue to impress you with their commitment and attention to detail.

Now, the second question is much more difficult to answer.

A long-term patient once told me as I congratulated him on his retirement, “It’s like standing on the edge of a cliff!”  I was taken aback because all I could think at the time was how many opportunities this gentleman and his wife had ahead of them.  I get it now, what he was referring to… the regular routine and confines of what I have known for the past 28 years will be removed. To quote a line from Monty Python, ”They said I could I go and live on an island somewhere!”…

It will take some time for me and my wife of 30 years to figure out what she wants me to do.

I will dearly miss my chairside visits with each and every one of you.  To be entrusted with your health and the health of your families over the years has been of great significance, one that I have appreciated more with each passing year.  Thank you for sharing this journey with me and my wife.

I wish you and your families all the best.
